Copper Wash Laundry Detergent

Detergents are a group of substances that possess cleansing properties in water and are most commonly used for the laundering of clothes as well as dishwashing. They typically consist of sodium salts of long chain alkyl hydrogen sulphate or a long chain of benzene sulphonic acid. Detergents consist of an amphiphilic structure and are comprised of a hydrophilic or polar head and a hydrophobic or non-polar tail, with the head consisting of an anionic or cationic group and the tail consisting of a long chain straight or branched hydrocarbon. The cleansing action of a detergent is based on the nature of its ends. The hydrophobic tail of a detergent molecule is attracted to oil and grease while the hydrophilic head is water soluble. In this way, when a dirty piece of cloth is dipped into a solution containing a detergent, the oil and grease sticks to the hydrophobic end while the water combines with the head. In this way, both oil and water-based impurities are removed from the cloth.

While detergents are effective at removing dirt, oil and grease from clothes, the presence of odor is dependent on bacteria. Personal malodor is caused by the production of volatile compounds due to the action of microorganisms as they break down sweat and skin cells. Since typical laundry detergents do not possess any compounds that actively interact with bacteria that might be present on clothes, the odors can often be masked by the action of perfumes present within them. However, this does not actively get rid of the bacteria causing the odor themselves.
